Jim Inhofe, a conservative firebrand known for his strong support of defense spending and his denial that human activity is the primary cause of climate change, announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election in 2024.
Inhofe, a five-term Republican senator from Oklahoma and until recently the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is one of the most outspoken critics of mainstream science that says human activity is the primary driver of the warming planet. He has frequently dismissed the scientific consensus on climate change as a hoax and has called for the United States to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.
Inhofe's decision to retire comes as the Republican Party is facing a growing backlash from younger voters over its stance on climate change. A recent poll found that 67% of Americans under the age of 30 believe that climate change is a serious threat, and 59% believe that the government should do more to address it.
